Spatial Scissors
Kinetic system for an adaptive canopy and screen

The kinetic system is based on the Nürnberg Scissors, a linked chain system comprising a number of crossed members. The folding mechanism of the structure can be described trigonometrically, and can be simulated and analyzed in an automated manner. This allows the geometry to adapt to different spatial requirements. A single input curve is sufficient to obtain all necessary output data which describes the required points of rotation for each element - the primary variable for geometry of such a structure.

The system is used as a flexible wall-like screen that can adapt to different spatial configurations and was selected for one of the Pininfarina-AED Awards in 2007.
